One of the strengths of the OLED screen of the iPhone XS Max is the reproduction and color fidelity, adjusted at all times according to the sRGB and DCI-P3 spaces. There is no shortage of Night Shift and True Tone modes, as well as HDR support (HDR10 and Dolby Vision).
Another highlight of the iPhone XS Max screen is the brightness level, which according to DisplayMate even exceeds 700 nits, which together with the typical contrast of OLED technology, makes it have excellent visibility outdoors, also with few reflections. . Color fidelity, contrast, brightness, and above all excellent outdoor visibility

The total power and stereo effect are more pronounced than in the previous generation, so we can use them without fear, although without the reference that would mean having those full speakers in the front of the screen.
A12 Bionic chip for iPhone XS Max
Apple adds and continues in its long-distance race in the championship of design and construction of chips for smartphones. The A12 Bionic is its latest offspring. It is the first to be born under 7 nm manufacturing, and it has six cores. Two of them are dedicated to performance while the other four are more focused on delivering efficiency.
As with every new generation of Apple chips, there is an advance in performance that translates into better benchmark figures, although there is not a jump in gross power as prominent as between previous generations. The theory tells us that Apple has focused more on efficiency and results in graphics (now with four cores for the GPU also designed by Apple) and machine learning.
Apple has put the brakes on improving raw performance on the new A12 Bionic to focus on efficiency, GPU, and machine learning for key elements like FaceID.

Two faces for FaceID, but it’s not enough
The most improved section in the A12 Bionic to the previous generation processors is in the neural engine, now with 8 cores and a much greater processing capacity. That part is in charge of the machine learning tasks that increasingly demand that extra real-time processing.
Siri, which presents the novelties of Shortcuts in iOS 12, is one of the great beneficiaries, although Apple continues to advance at a slower pace than that of its rivals in the competitive and expectant world of virtual assistants.

Another novelty that comes to FaceID from the hand of the new A12 Bionic is the possibility of registering up to two faces. Apple allows these to be from different people, but they warn us that if we do so, in addition to being somewhat slower, the system loses about 50% security.
The double FaceID registration has been designed, according to Apple, for those users who, due to work or variable/personal circumstances, may have two somewhat different faces in certain situations. Registering both helps the system fail less and be faster to identify in any situation.
Battery Performance of iPhone XS Max

With a 29 W model, we can achieve that 50% in half an hour, with about 90 minutes for a full charge.

The rest of the advances are on the side of the information that the iPhone user has about his phone. There are more details on battery, but also on the time of use and parental control of the most complete that we have seen integrated into a system.
As a particularity of iOS 12 on the iPhone XS Max, it should be noted that there are hardly any advantages to having a larger screen and space for content. In my case, it has barely worked for me, and one ends up discarding that option that, with the disappearance of Touch ID and the arrival of gestures on the screen, requires an expertise that I surely do not have.
Cameras of iPhone XS Max: more point-and-shoot, even in portrait mode

In these cases, the iPhone XS Max camera shows a very correct exposure and color reproduction, as well as an adequate level of detail and without exaggeration. It is also a very fast camera and with a simpler interface impossible.
The rest of the physical section of the iPhone XS Max camera remains unchanged. We continue to have two cameras, the second acting as a telephoto lens to achieve a 2x zoom and take advantage of that focal length for portrait mode.
One detail that squeaks us is that Apple maintains the exclusivity of portrait mode for the second camera, smaller in size and with less capacity to capture light than the main one, so, even though in the iPhone XR they have shown that with a single camera You could get that portrait effect, here, for now, we are trapped and not taking advantage of the higher quality that the main sensor could offer us in situations where the lack of light makes the portrait mode stumble on the iPhone XS Max.
Portrait mode with adjustable blur
Speaking of portrait mode, that of the iPhone XS Max receives improvements from the hand of the A12 Bionic and the new ISP with greater processing capacity and machine learning. Already in the first betas of iOS 12, you could see some improvement in this portrait mode, especially at the edges.
In our experience with the iPhone XS Max, portrait mode improves slightly, especially in the quality of background blur. It maintains a reproduction of the skin tone that seems to us the most faithful on the market but on the other hand, we continue to miss a sharpness that does justice to the level that it should demand from a terminal that claims to be the best on the market, starting with the price.
What is new in the portrait mode of the iPhone XS Max is the adjustable selective blur after taking the photo. This option is added to the one that already existed to change the type of lighting, a function that by the way has been somewhat stagnant and with only acceptable results in certain and rare situations.
Selective blur in portrait mode supports varying depth from a fictitious f1.4 to f16. In the first case, the center of the face would barely remain in focus, and its result is quite extreme.
If the subject has remained still and the initial focus has been successful on his face, the blur that is achieved is quite consistent and the bokeh very attractive when the background is playing, such as at night with lights.
That portrait mode with variable blur applies to the secondary camera as well. Together with the light modes, they leave us a fairly complete series to improve or at least personalize selfies where we have been very happy with both the sharpness and the reproduction of skin tones, completely faithful to reality.
Smart HDR mode
One of the renewed sections in the iPhone XS Max is the HDR mode. Under iOS 12 it receives the surname Smart with the clear objective of automatically improving photographs in complicated high-contrast moments of the scene. Here we are talking about Apple, so there is no way to control that effect, everything is on the side of the IPS, without the possibility of activating or deactivating on-demand in real-time.
The positive side of this decision by Apple is that the iPhone XS Max reinforces the idea of a point-and-shoot camera in which there is a very high percentage of obtaining an excellent image. In sunsets and sunrises, as well as with the sun in full swing, the iPhone XS Max camera performs excellently in many situations, having overcome problems with overexposure. The lights, in general, are already under control.
However, in very high contrast situations, especially in nature, Apple’s emphasis on bringing back the darkest areas causes an unnatural HDR effect that has been exasperating in some situations.
The best thing is that in the camera options if we do not like the result, we deactivate the Smart HDR mode (it is activated by default), and we can also leave the “Keep normal photo” option activated. Those options should have direct access in the camera interface for my taste, but for now, we have to settle for activating or not HDR, an option that appears when we deactivate the Smart HDR option in the configuration.
Better stabilized 4K video
Apple has always been known for offering a high-quality video recording mode. In this iPhone XS Max, we have the expected modes, with 4K video up to 60 fps and slow-motion mode at 240 fps and 1080p quality at the extremes.
The performance improvements were already seen in photography mode and low light and high contrast situations carry over to the video mode experience as well.
However, two aspects raise the bar for video with the iPhone XS Max: the cleaner and more powerful stereo sound, and above all the video stabilization. In the latter case, the results in hand only with the phone, without an external gadget to stabilize, are very good.
