This study uses a quasi-experimental design with randomised pretest and posttest groups. Groups of 82 students. 44 students used the i-Bird app on smartphones (SA) and 38 used a bird’s guidebook (CT) (GB). SA (N-gain = 0.54) and GB (N-gain = 0.44) students’ classification ability increased in the medium category. The parametric t-test (p=.038) showed a difference between SA and GB. Thus, well-designed technological progress can aid learning. Future learning applications for smartphones must be designed based on needs.
