Tim Federle developed the American mockumentary musical drama television series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series for Disney+, drawing inspiration from the High School Musical film series. The series follows a group of young theater fans who take part in a staging of High School Musical: The Musical as their school production. East High School, the school where the original movie was shot, is a fictionalized version of East High School in the series. Additionally, it examines how individuals deal with connections with their families, friends, and those they love. Before its launch on Disney+ on November 12, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series debuted on Disney Channel, ABC, and Freeform on November 8, 2019, as a preview simulcast. Its first season had ten episodes.

The rehearsal process is captured on camera for a documentary series about the musical.
