A Shelter-in-Place order was issued near Widefield High School in the El Paso area in Colorado after a shooting was reported on Sunday. An El Paso County depth was killed in the tragic incident and the police are looking for the suspect. Read on to know what happened.

Multiple callers reported a shooting in the area of the 500 block of Ponderosa in Security. Following the reports, a shelter-in-place order was issued which has been since lifted. The suspect has been identified and the police have publicized his picture to track him down.


El Paso Shooting: Shelter-in-Place Order Issued

A shooting took place in El Paso County on Sunday around 5 PM. The unfortunate incident took place in the area of the 500 block of Ponderosa in Security after which a Shelter-in-Place order was issued for the area near Widefield High School.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPCSO) sent two El Paso County deputies and a Fountain police officer to respond to the scene. They were immediately met with gunfire upon reaching the affected area.

According to the reports, a Hispanic man was firing shots and an El Paso County deputy officer received at least one shot that turned out to be fatal.

Andrew Peery, El Paso County Deputy, Shot Dead

In the El Paso shooting on Sunday, one deputy, Andrew Peery, was shot with at least one round. Crews tried to save him but he passed away in the line of duty. He was 39 years old.

“Andrew was a highly dedicated, highly decorated, SWAT operator for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, and he has been with my office since 2016,” said Sheriff Bill Elder in a statement Sunday night.

A procession took place for late Andrew Peery just before 9:00 PM from Memorial Hospital to Nevada Avenue, then to the sheriff’s office on Vermjio. The sheriff’s office asked residents to line up on the street and hold flags in the fallen depth’s honor.

“My thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of Deputy Peery and all our neighbors in law enforcement who put their lives at risk to serve others,” said Colorado Gov. Jared Polis.

Andrew Peery is survived by his wife and two children.


Who is the Suspect in El Paso Shooting?

The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating the case. They declared it secure just after 10:30 PM and confirmed there was no further threat to the public. The police have released details about the suspect in the shooting.

His name is John Paz and he is a Hispanic male. “We are actively looking for a Hispanic Male John Paz related to this shooting,” the Police wrote on Twitter alongside the suspect’s image.

The officials stated that he is considered to be armed and dangerous. Those who may know his whereabouts or spot him are requested to call 911 or the Sheriff’s Office dispatch center at 390-5555.
