Why Did Ser Otto Send Lady Alicent to King Viserys’ Chambers?

The prequel to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, just aired on both HBO and HBO Max, sending audiences back to Westeros after being away for a few years. As this episode is a series premiere, there are many plotlines that are being set up for the series going forward. One such storyline comes towards the end of the episode, where the Hand sends his daughter to the King’s Chambers. If you’re wondering why exactly this may be happening, then you’ve come to the right place.

Warning: Major spoilers for the series premiere of House of the Dragon.

Why Did The Hand Send His Daughter to the King’s Chambers?

During the series premiere of House of the Dragon, King Viserys loses both his wife during childbirth and his newborn son due to complications soon after that. Obviously, the King is grieving, something which his Hand, Ser Otto Hightower, takes notice of. However, his solution to help the mourning king is to seemingly pimp out his own daughter, Lady Alicent Hightower.

After a bit of a strange interaction with her father, Alicent is asked by Otto to dress up in her deceased mother’s clothing and go to King Viserys’ chambers in order to “comfort him,” to which she complies. We see Lady Alicent dress up, bring a book to read, and offer her condolences to the Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

While it is never explicitly stated, it is heavily implied that Ser Otto is sending his daughter off to seduce the King. The episode also doesn’t show us exactly how the interaction between Viserys and Alicent ends, so this, along with Alicent’s relationship with her father, is certainly something to keep an eye on going forward. Nothing has been explicitly stated thus far though, only implied, but given that this is Game of Thrones, we pretty much have to assume the worst until we are proven otherwise.

So, that is everything we know about why the Hand sent his daughter to the King’s Chambers. Keep a lookout for more House of the Dragon coverage here at Twinfinite, some of which can be viewed through the links below.
