Hannah started her career with both London’s West End and New York’s Broadway. She played the role of Starbird in “Space Family Robinson” (directed by Julian & Stephen Butler, 2002), and Suzanne Valadon in “Lautrec”.
Hannah performed the role of the Lady of the Lake in “Spamalot” both in the London production and then on Broadway. She got the nomination for the Olivier Award for her extraordinary performance in this role. She also got so much appreciation for her character of Desirée Armfeldt in Trevor Nunn’s revival of “A Little Night Music”. After this performance, Hannah was considered as the “Joanna Lumley of musical theater”. She also got the Olivier Award nomination in 2010 as the best actress for her role in “A Little Night Music”.
In the middle of 2010, Hannah was cast as Witch in the production of Into the Woods in London’s Open Air Theatre. She started the role of “Wicked Witch of the West” in the West End production of The Wizard of Oz. Though she left the production on 4 September 2011.
Hannah has won the whatsonstage.com Theatergoers Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her excellence. In 2012, she was featured in Chichester Festival Theater’s revival of “Kiss Me, Kate”. Later this theater was shifted to the Old Vic Theater on London’s South Bank in November 2012.
Hannah first came to the screen in 2012 with the film “Les Misérables”. In 2014, she appeared in a guest role on the ITV comedy Benidorm. In the HBC series “Game of Thrones”, she appeared as the “Shame Nun”, Septa Unella, in seasons 5 and 6.
She did all the stunts on her own, but she was waterboarded as she did these stunts just after nine weeks of her daughter’s birth.
Hannah also appeared in a recurring role on the Netflix series Sex Education as Jackson’s overbearing mother, Sophia Marchetti.
Nowadays Hannah is working as Rebecca Welton, the owner of AFC Richmond on the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. This show received a lot of appreciation for its theme which was based on the supportive female friendship between Rebecca and Juno Temple’s character Keeley. Hannah also gave her voice to songs in the season one episode “Make Rebecca Great Again” and the season two episodes “Carol of the Bells” and “No Weddings and a Funeral”.
In 2024, she achieved the “Primetime Emmy Award” for “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series”. She also received the “Critics’ Choice Television Award” for “Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series”.
Hannah is going to cast Lady Bellaston in the ITV drama miniseries Tom Jones, based on Henry Fielding’s 1749 novel. She will also be featured in Disney’s forthcoming sequel Hocus Pocus 2.
