Usman Khawaja is an Australian professional cricketer who has represented his country in all 3 formats of the sport (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is). Having made his international debut in January 2011, he had played only 44 Tests, 40 ODIs, and 9 T20Is, as of December 2024. Due to a combination of indifferent form and shoddy fitness, he has played sporadically for Australia and had not been selected for an international match after August 2019 (as of December 2024). Before breaking into the senior national team in 2011, he had helped Australia reach the semi-final of the 2006 Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup. In the Australian domestic circuit, he has played for New South Wales (2007-08–2011-12) and Queensland (2012-13–Present) across all 3 formats. A rare occurrence in modern cricket, Usman has also played domestic cricket outside of his home country representing teams such as Derbyshire County Cricket Club (2011–2012), Lancashire County Cricket Club (2014), and Glamorgan County Cricket Club (2018) in England. A dynamic top-order batter, he has been featured in franchise-based T20 leagues around the world, turning out for Sydney Thunder (2011-12–Present) in the BBL (Big Bash League); Rising Pune Supergiant (2016) in the IPL (Indian Premier League); and Islamabad United (2024) in the PSL (Pakistan Super League).

Usman Khawaja Facts

  1. Born in Islamabad, Pakistan, Usman, and his family had emigrated to Australia when he was 5 years old. The family had settled down in the state of New South Wales.
  2. He is a qualified commercial and instrument-rated pilot and had attained his basic pilot license even before his driving license.
  3. When he had made his international debut in January 2011, in an Ashes test match against England, he had become the first Muslim and first Pakistani-born cricketer to represent Australia at the senior level. He was the 7th foreign-born cricketer to represent Australia in the last 80 years.
  4. In a weird coincidence, his international debut in all 3 formats for Australia came in the month of January – January 2011 in Tests, January 2013 in ODIs, and January 2016 in T20Is.
  5. Before the 3rd match of Australia’s bilateral away test series against India, in March 2013, he was one of the 4 players who had been suspended by the team management following a breach of discipline.
  6. In the 2015–16 season of the BBL, he was the 2nd-highest run-scorer (345 runs at an unbelievable average of 172.5 and an astonishing strike-rate of 163.5) in the tournament despite playing just 4 of his team’s 10 matches (the 2nd and the last matches of the league stage, the semi-final, and the final). His scores in those matches were 109 runs not out (70 balls), 62 (42), 104 not out (59), and 70 (40).
  7. He was named the ‘Player of the Match’ in all but the 2nd of those matches. His heroics had helped the Sydney Thunder franchise win the title, their first in the tournament’s history. What was even more special about the victory was the fact that the team had finished 8th, 8th, 8th, and 7th in the previous 4 editions of the 8-team competition.
  8. In November 2016, when he had scored 145 in Australia’s first innings of their day-night test match against South Africa, he had become the first Australian cricketer to score a century in a day-night test match.
  9. In October 2018, he had scored 141 runs in 302 balls in the 2nd innings of the 1st test match of Australia’s bilateral test series against Pakistan in the UAE. Chasing an improbable target of 462 runs, his heroic effort had helped Australia battle their way to a score of 362/8 in 139.5 overs to salvage a memorable draw. He had, thus, become just the 5th Australian batsman to have scored a 4th-innings hundred in a test match in Asia. The 302 balls that he had faced in his knock were the then most balls faced for Australia in a test match in Asia in the 4th innings, and also the then most balls faced by any batsman in the 4h innings in the UAE. Usman had also scored 85 runs in Australia’s 1st innings in that match. With an aggregate of 229 runs, he was the highest run-scorer in the 2-match series across both teams.
  10. In November 2020, his older brother Arsalan had been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for having used a fake terror plot to frame a colleague.
