The hotly anticipated remake of 1994’s Live A Live has undergone something of a glow-up. Now appearing in Square Enix’s iconic HD-2D style — the likes of which we saw in Triangle Strategy and Octopath Traveler — the game’s trailers look stunning, and we certainly enjoyed those sumptuous visuals when we went hands-on with it a couple of weeks ago.

Outside of the game itself, what better way to show off this newly-revitalised cast of characters than with an original painting by regular Square Enix collaborator Naoki Ikushima? Having worked on the character design team for both of the previously mentioned games as well as Bravely Default II, Ikushima knows what goes into making a piece of art that really pops.

This is demonstrated in the video below, which sees Ikushima bring Live A Live’s main characters to life much as the artist did with a gorgeous illustration for Triangle Strategy back in March. Aside from a brilliant painting, the video is accompanied by Yoko Shimomura’s orchestral main theme, too, demonstrating that the game has more to offer than simply stunning visuals.

We’re itching to try out this classic JRPG that never officially left Japan, and this artwork has got us even more excited to play when it’s released on 22nd July, if only so that we can see Ikushima’s character designs in all their 2D pixel glory.
