Tom Blundell Facts

  1. Tom’s international debut for New Zealand was a bit fortuitous. He had been added to the team’s T20I squad in January 2017 after their regular wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi had sustained an injury. On January 8, 2017, he had made his T20I debut, in a match against Bangladesh.
  2. It was a dream start to the year for him, as just one day before this debut, he had been a part of the Wellington Firebirds team that had defeated Central Stags by 14 runs to win the Super Smash (New Zealand’s premier domestic T20 competition) for just the 2nd time.
  3. He had made his Test match debut for New Zealand in December 2017. In that game, against the West Indies, he had scored 107 runs not out in the team’s first innings. This was the then highest score recorded by a New Zealand wicketkeeper on test match debut. This was also the first instance of a wicketkeeper scoring a hundred on test match debut since Matt Prior in 2007.
  4. In April 2019, he had been named in New Zealand’s squad for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, even though he had never played an ODI match until then. He had made his Test match debut in December 2017 and his T20I debut in January 2017 but had not yet broken through in the team’s ODI XI. A backup/reserve wicketkeeper in the squad, he did not get to play a single match during the tournament and had to wait until February 2020 to eventually make his ODI debut.
  5. In November 2020, in a 3rd round match of the 2020–21 Plunket Shield (New Zealand’s premier domestic first-class competition) season, he was given out ‘obstructing the field’. This was just the 32nd occasion in the history of first-class cricket when a male batter had been dismissed in such a manner. It was only the 2nd time in history that such a dismissal had been recorded in a first-class match in New Zealand. The first instance was in the 1954-55 domestic season, in a match between Canterbury and Central Districts.
