The true-ish story of a New York socialite fraudster from Shonda Rhimes and an LOL primer: Here’s what’s streaming for Canadians this week

With so many different streaming platforms and cable offerings to navigate, choosing what to watch has never been harder. To make things easier, here are our best tune-in tips for the week ahead.

WEDNESDAY

The Privilege

This German thriller takes audiences inside a private school where a group of students investigate a series of supernatural occurrences. During their analysis, the classmates uncover a dark conspiracy that could be the cause of the strange activity.

Netflix

The Book of Boba Fett

For “Star Wars” fans waiting to see what the payoff will be in the first season finale of “The Book of Boba Fett,” the wait is finally over. The return of Grogu in last week’s penultimate episode means it’s doubtful he will be back for the finale. The writers will likely save his choice between the Jedi or the Mandalorian for “The Mandalorian” when it returns. We should, however, see the payoff of the Pyke War and it will be interesting to see what Cad Bane will do in the last episode. Fans seem fickle over the slow-moving pace of “The Book of Boba Fett,” but it appears to be reaching its climax at the perfect time.

THURSDAY

The Girl Before

Based on JP Delaney’s bestselling novel, this four-part HBO series tells the story of Jane (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who moves into an ultra-minimalist house designed by a mysterious architect. The twist? To live in his humble abode, all occupants must play by his rules. As the structure changes, Jane learns about who lived in the place before and the show then begins to weave the two timelines together. Count us in.

FRIDAY

Inventing Anna

Error

Not only is this Netflix and Shonda Rhimes offering the pick of the week, it’s an early contender for pick of the year. Best known for her Emmy-winning portrayal of Ruth on Netflix’s “Ozark,” Julia Garner portrays Anna Sorokin, the faux New York socialite found guilty of fooling banks, hotels and wealthy financiers between 2013 and 2017. The tale of the fraudster is based on a true story by reporter Jessica Pressler published in 2018.

Netflix

I Want You Back

This Amazon original movie stars Charlie Day and Jenny Slate as Peter and Emma, a pair of strangers who meet after both being dumped by their partners. The rom-com’s premise is pretty straightforward. When Peter and Emma both see that their exes have moved on, they decide to do whatever it takes to end their partners’ new relationships.

LOL: Last One Laughing Brazil

With the highly anticipated launch of the Canadian version of this series next week, the perfect way to learn about the “LOL: Last One Laughing” franchise is to check out the Brazilian version of the show to get ready. The premise is simple. Ten of Brazil’s best comedians occupy a house together for six hours while trying to make each other laugh. The winner is the one who can go the longest without cracking a smile. It’s a fun concept.

SUNDAY

Super Bowl LVI

It’s unclear whether the absence of the recently retired Tom Brady, pandemic villain Aaron Rodgers or just-ousted Patrick Mahomes will play a role in the ratings for this year’s big game, but it’s still going to be the TV event of the year. The matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams will be played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. While the Rams technically have home-field advantage (because of a strange alternating system), they will be considered the away team in this game. Don’t like sports? Just tune in at halftime to see one of the most star-studded lineups ever assembled. It includes Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige.

CTV, TSN, RDS, 6 p.m.

Children Ruin Everything

CTV has awarded its coveted post-Super Bowl time slot to “Children Ruin Everything,” showing great faith in its new comedy. The episode sees the Berneys go on a road trip to Manitoulin Island. When James (Aaron Abrams) runs late, he argues that a third child would have made the trip even harder.
