Teesta Setalvad Arrested

On the evening of June 25, activist Teesta Setalvad was arrested by police. Teesta’s NGO was instrumental in ensuring that many victims of the Gujarat riots of 2002 received justice in the courts. A day after Zakia Jafri’s appeal against the SIT’s decision not to charge Narendra Modi for his alleged involvement in the anti-Muslim riots was denied by the Supreme Court, her arrest followed. She and two ex-police officers from Gujarat, R.B. Sreekumar and Sanjiv Bhatt, are charged with misleading the SIT to convict innocent people.

Rukmini Sen, a journalist and filmmaker, arrived at Setalvad’s house after learning that the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had done so. This is how she described the entire incident.

Why Teesta Setalvad Arrested?

A court in Ahmedabad on Saturday sentenced activist Teesta Setalvad and former director general of police R.B. Sreekumar to 14 days of judicial imprisonment after they were both accused of falsifying evidence in connection with cases involving the 2002 Gujarat riots.
