“Such a special moment” – Monica Puig is delighted to be back on court

Monica Puig made her first appearance in the WTA circuit after a long break having undergone three surgeries in three years

Monica Puig made a comeback to professional tennis at the Madrid Open. Puig was out of action for over two years due to elbow and shoulder injuries. Puig lost to Danielle Collins 7-5, 6-0 in her comeback encounter. “Such a special moment. It’s been a long road to get back to this point. This is just the first step. Gracias Madrid”, an elated Puig tweeted.

Puig peaked at the 2016 Rio Olympics, winning a gold medal for her country, Puerto Rico. With the feat, she also became the first Latin American champion in the women’s singles discipline and is the only unseeded female player to win the gold medal since the reintroduction of tennis in 1988. During her career, Puig has defeated several top-ten players including Sara Errani, Caroline Garcia, Angelique Kerber, Garbiñe Muguruza, Aryna Sabalenka, and Caroline Wozniacki.
