Siddarth Yadav is an Indian professional cricketer who came to prominence in February 2024 as a member of the Indian squad that had won the 2024 ICC (International Cricket Council) Under-19 Cricket World Cup. This was India’s 4th successive appearance in the final of the tournament after losing efforts in 2016 and 2020 and a winning campaign in 2018. This was also the 5th time that India had lifted the trophy after victorious campaigns in 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2018. A couple of months before this, in December 2021, Siddarth was a part of the Indian squad (although he did not make it into the playing XI in any of India’s matches) that had triumphed at the 2021 ACC (Asian Cricket Council) Under-19 Asia Cup. This was the 8th time that India had won this competition out of the 9 editions that had been played.

Siddarth Yadav Facts

  1. Siddarth had inherited his passion for cricket from his father, Shravan, who had dreamed of representing India but had ended up being just a net bowler. Shravan, who later started running a grocery store, would sacrifice his business to train his son in the sport. He would often shut down his shop at 2 pm, take Siddarth to nearby ground, and give him throwdowns until 6 pm.
  2. His friends and teammates had nicknamed him ‘Jayasuriya’ as they felt that his game was reminiscent of the legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya.
  3. He could not break into the playing XI in any of India’s 5 matches at the 2021 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup and the trend continued in India’s first match of the 2024 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, against South Africa. Soon after that match, India’s captain Yash Dhull and 5 other members of the Indian squad, including Siddarth, had been tested positive for COVID-19. This meant that all of those players had to miss out on the next (and last) 2 matches of the group stage, against Ireland and Uganda.
  4. Despite missing so many first-choice players, India had managed to win those games easily, top their group, and qualify for the quarter-final. All members of India’s squad who were affected by COVID-19 had recovered in time for that match, against Bangladesh, and the regular members of the team’s playing XI had regained their spots.
  5. However, Nishant Sindhu, who had been chosen by the team management to captain India in the matches against Ireland and Uganda, had now been tested positive for COVID-19. This had opened up a place in the middle-order which went to Siddarth and he made his Youth ODI debut in that match. However, this would be the only match that he would play in the tournament as Nishant recovered quickly enough to reclaim his place in the team for the matches against Australia in the semi-final and England in the final.
