Roger Federer is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time. The Swiss Maestro has 20 Grand Slam titles to his name, a record he shares along with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic – the most by any ATP Professional.
He rose to fame when he was hardly 17 years old, winning the 1998 Junior Wimbledon. He won his first Grand Slam title, when he was just 21, at the 2003 Wimbledon. In just a year’s time he had already won 4 Grand Slam titles.
The Swiss Maestro was almost unstoppable in the late 2000s, especially at the Wimbledon. No one even came close to defeating the legendary Swiss in the grass court.
The late 2000s also saw the emergence of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, and along with Federer, they were called the ‘Big 4’. Early 2010s saw Nadal and Djokovic dominate men’s tennis, while Federer took a step back.
He was also thwarted a couple of times by Andy Murray. However, Federer found his groove after 2016, and was going good until an injury pegged him back.
He has recovered from the injury he suffered at the 2020 Australian Open, but his game seems to be a bit down these days. 2021 also wasn’t all that great for the Swiss ace. While he did reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, he was knocked out in the fourth round of the French Open.
He didn’t play in the Australian Open and then also missed the US Open due to injury. Federer missed a huge chunk of the end of 2021 while he was recovering from injury.
The Swiss ace also did not participate in the 2024 Australian Open. However, he hopes to make a return sometime in 2024, especially with Wimbledon on the horizon.

Just a year into his debut, Federer broke into the top 100 of the ATP rankings. His insane run at the 2001 French Open saw him enter the top 15 of the rankings.
He finished 2002 strongly, getting into the top 10 at the end of the year.
In 2003, Federer won his first Grand Slam title at the 2003 Wimbledon. He was ranked number 3 after his win, and a win was needed in the 2003 Montreal Open to claim the number 1 spot.
However, Federer fell to Andy Roddick in the semi-finals, and hence had to wait for a while, before he could sit at the apex.
2004 was wild for King Roger. He won three Grand Slam Titles and easily claimed the number 1 spot. And since then, there was no looking back. He hardly fell out of the top 5 after that.
And now, despite not featuring at all in the year 2020, except at the Australian Open, Federer was sitting in the top 10 of the world. However, the lack of tennis during the end of 2021 and the start of 2024 has affected the Swiss star’s rankings.

Federer also owns the record of being the oldest No.1 (36 in 2018). He also owns the record being the no.1 for most consecutive weeks (237 weeks) in ATP history.
With a stunning 103 career titles, The Swiss Maestro is second in the list of tennis professionals with the most single titles in the Open Era. Only Jimmy Connors sits above him.
Roger Federer Family and Personal Life
Federer was born to a Swiss father, Robert Federer and a South African mother, Lynette Federer. He has an older sister.
Federer showed keen interest in a variety of sports during his childhood days – badminton, basketball and of course, Tennis. He grew up supporting the legendary Swiss football team FC Basel.
Federer is married to Miroslava Federer, popularly known as Mirka Federer. She was a WTA player, whose career was shortened due to a foot injury. The pair are said to have met at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where they both represented their country, Switzerland.
The pair married in 2009, in a pretty private ceremony. Mirka gave birth to identical female twins in the year 2009, and surprisingly to identical male twins in the year 2014.
