She has acted in films made in multiple languages including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, English, Telugu, and Odia. 1. Riya and her older sister Raima both use ‘Sen’, their mother’s last name, as their on-screen/stage surname. In official documents, however, they both have been registered with the surname ‘Dev Varma’, their father’s family name.
2. A former student at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, she is known to design most of the clothes that she wears in films and TV commercials. She also designs jewelry, as a hobby.
3. She is a trained Kathak (one of the 8 major forms of Indian classical dance) performer, has taken kickboxing lessons, and has also completed one of the 5 levels of training in belly dancing.
4. In November 2003, during World Children’s Week, she had made charity appearances at McDonald’s India to raise funds for pediatric eye care.
5. During the shooting of the 2005 comedy film Shaadi No. 1 in France, she had been accidentally run over by a stuntman’s motorbike. Although she had been knocked unconscious for a while, she was not seriously injured.
6. In September 2007, she had been ranked 9th in Femina magazine’s list of the ’50 Most Beautiful Women’. The following year, she was a jury member at the final of the Mr. India contest.
