Regina began her legal career in 1977 as a law clerk in Judge Barbeau’s office, and in 1980, she became a law clerk in the Minnesota Supreme Court while pursuing her law degree.

She began working as an assistant attorney in private practice after graduating and also worked in the attorney general’s office in 1984. Later, in 1985, she joined the private business Bassford, Lockhart, Truesdell & Briggs, where she remained until 1993.

She later became a partner at Wilson & Chu and worked there until 1996. She did, however, go into private practice in 1997. Regina Chu was appointed to the bench by Governor Jesse Ventura in 2002. She was appointed as Hennepin County’s 4th judicial district judge. She was first elected to a full term in 2004, and she was re-elected in 2010 and 2016.

Controversy

Regina was recently involved in a controversy as she gave a low sentence to former officer Kim Potter for killing a black driver Daunte Wright, citing the difficulty of the police profession and Potter’s contrition. The former cop must now serve 16 months in prison, which is two-thirds of her eligible term. This enraged the victim’s mother as much as the attorneys, and Katie Wright, the victim’s mother, told reporters that the punishment made her son a murderer all over again.

Protesters and those who criticize the punishment and bring out the sentence’s favoritism towards white people are chanting “White woman tears.” This raised various difficulties in the legal system, sparking fierce debate and protests.
