Pilot Dead After Light Plane Crashed in Bushland South of Townsville, Queensland

Townsville, Queensland- A 67-year-old pilot died after his light plane crashed in north Queensland. The aircraft went down over Shirbourne, a rural area located southwest of Townsville. The tragic accident occurred early on Sunday. Read on to know more.

On Sunday, September 11, 2024, the Queensland police started searching for the light plane at around 9:30 AM after it didn’t make the scheduled landing at Ayr. The police then found the wreckage of the crashed aircraft by a rescue chopper in rugged bushland on Bahr Road.

The pilot was found dead on the scene. He has been identified as a 67-year-old man from Townsville who was flying the plane. He was the only man onboard. The police have sent the body for autopsy at the local Medical Examiner’s office.

The police also revealed that the crash site was only accessible by foot due to thick foliage and steep terrain. It is located in Shirbourne, 38 KM west of Ayr.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the Shirbourne, Queensland Light Plane Crash

Queensland Police is investigating the tragic Shirbourne light plane crash and it will continue tomorrow. The scene will be guarded overnight. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau was notified of the fatal crash. However, they referred the case to Recreational Aviation Australia.

Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus) will support Queensland Police in the investigation with the aid of the Forensic Crash Unit. The circumstances surrounding the crash alongside the specific cause will be available soon.

Matt Bouttell, RAAus chief, said: “I wish to send our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased pilot.”

He added: “It’s early stages but… RAAus has offered our assistance in order to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident.”


Who was the Pilot in Shirbourne, Queensland Light Plane Crash?

Queensland Police is yet to reveal the identity of the deceased pilot who died in the Light Plane crash in Shirbourne on Sunday. For now, we only know that he was a 67-year-old man from Townsville. Any other detail about him is unknown at the time of writing.
