As one of the most influential writers of the Black Arts Movement, Giovanni first rose to prominence in the late 1960s. Her early writing offers a powerful, militant African American viewpoint and was inspired by the civil rights and Black Power movements of the time, earning her the moniker “Poet of the Black Revolution” from one writer. She started creating children’s books in the 1970s and co-founded the publishing house NikTom, Ltd. to give other African American women authors a platform. Giovanni relocated back to Knoxville, where she assisted with Christopher’s care while working at a Walgreens pharmacy. Blanche McConnell Cowan (“Jackie”), the newly appointed dean of women at Fisk University, persuaded Giovanni to enrol there again the following fall. While attending Fisk University, Giovanni edited the student literary journal Élan, revived the campus SNCC organization, and had a piece on gender issues in the Movement appeared in Negro Digest. She earned a B.A. in history in 1967 and did so with honors. She lost her grandma Louvenia Watson not long after graduating, and she resorted to writing as a coping mechanism.
