Nicky began his professional career in 2016 when the Kansas City Royals selected him with the 163rd overall choice. In his first year, he played for a minor league team, the Burlington Royals, and the following year, he played for the Wilmington Blue Rocks and the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. He also played in the Arizona Fall League with the Surprise Saguaros that year.

He played with Northwest Arkansas and Omaha Storm Chasers in 2018, before making his MLB debut with the Kansas City Royals in 2019. Nicky made his debut against the Texas Rangers and maintained his form throughout the season. He was nominated for the Gold Glove in 2020 but did not win the award. He hurt himself during the 2021 season and appeared as a Royals shortstop but was unable to perform due to another injury. Even though he was unable to participate in the season, he was named to the All-Star Ballot for a hitter position in 2021.
