Naseem Shah Facts

  1. Naseem has been nicknamed ‘Lillee Shah’ by his teammates because his bowling action is reminiscent of the legendary Australian pace bowler Dennis Lillee.
  2. He had first come into the spotlight in October 2019 when he had been included in Pakistan’s squad for their upcoming bilateral away test series against Australia. The following month, he had made his test match debut in Brisbane at the age of 16 years and 279 days.
  3. This had made him the 9th-youngest player in history to have played a test match. Coincidentally, all 8 players above him in this list have been from the Indian subcontinent (5 from Pakistan, 2 from Bangladesh, and 1 from India). The player just above Naseem in this list, at the 8th position, shares his first name with him. Nasim-ul-Ghani, also a Pakistani, had made his test match debut against the West Indies in January 1958 when he was 16 years and 248 days old.
  4. On December 6, 2019, he was included in Pakistan’s squad for the 2020 ICC (International Cricket Council) Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
  5. In mid-December 2019, he had recorded a 5-wicket haul in the 2nd innings of the 2nd test match of Pakistan’s bilateral home series against Sri Lanka. His spell of 5/31 in 12.5 overs had helped Pakistan register a massive 263-run win and consequently a 1-0 victory in the 2 match series.
  6. This had made Naseem, at 16 years and 307 days, the second-youngest bowler overall (and the youngest pace bowler) to take a 5-wicket haul in a test match. In a weird quirk of fate, the only bowler to have achieved this feat at a younger age than Naseem was the aforementioned Nasim-ul-Ghani (a left-arm spinner) who had recorded 5/116 against the West Indies in March 1958. He was 16 years and 303 days old when he had achieved that feat which means that Naseem Shah had missed out on the record by just 4 days.
  7. On December 31, 2019, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the governing body for the sport in the country, had withdrawn his name from Pakistan’s squad for the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In January 2020, the organization had issued a clarification that Naseem’s withdrawal had nothing to do with age-fudging which is a persistent issue in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in cricket. They had stated that they did not want to expend Naseem at the Under-19 level because he had already proved his worth in senior international cricket.
  8. In February 2020, in the 2nd innings of a home test match against Bangladesh, he had recorded a hat-trick (the feat of scalping 3 wickets in 3 successive deliveries). At the age of 16 years and 359 days, he had become the youngest bowler ever to take a hat-trick in a test match. This was just the 45th occasion in the history of test match cricket that a hat-trick had been recorded and only the 5th instance of a Pakistani bowler doing so. Wasim Akram (twice), Abdul Razzaq, and Mohammad Sami were the Pakistani bowlers to have achieved this feat before Naseem.
