Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is an ETSI standard for second-generation (2G) digital cellular networks used by mobile phones and tablets. In Finland in December 1991. [2] By mid-2010s, it had over 90% market share and operated in 193 countries and territories.

First networks

Enhancements
Work began in 1991 to expand GSM to 1800 MHz, and the first 1800 MHz network, DCS 1800, went live in the UK in 1993. Telstra was the first network operator outside Europe to deploy a GSM network, and the first hand-held GSM phone was released.
1995 saw the commercial launch of fax, data, and SMS messaging, the first 1900 MHz GSM network in the US, and 10 million GSM subscribers worldwide. GSM Association formed the same year. Prepaid GSM SIM cards were introduced in 1996, and 100 million GSM subscribers were reached in 1998.
In 2000, the first GPRS-compatible phones went on sale. In 2001, the first UMTS (W-CDMA) network was launched. 500 million GSM users worldwide. In 2002, MMS and the 800 MHz GSM network went live. Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) services began in 2003, and GSM subscribers surpassed 1 billion in 2004.
By 2005, GSM networks served 1.5 billion subscribers, 75% of the global cellular market. First HSDPA-capable network launched in 2005. First HSUPA launched in 2007. HSPA is a 3G technology, not part of GSM. 2008 saw three billion GSM subscribers worldwide.
