This weekend’s weather conditions are creating extreme fire danger across Oregon, leading multiple utility companies to begin public safety power shutoffs Friday morning. Shutoffs are scheduled through at least Saturday for people living in high-risk areas.

With hot temperatures, low humidity and strong east winds, the National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings for much of the state. These warnings indicate that “critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now…or will shortly,” according to the NWS website.

High winds can quickly spread any fires that do start, while low humidity makes it more difficult for firefighters to control the blaze. Utilities like PGE and Pacific Power are turning off power in areas where there is an increased risk of downed power lines causing fires.

While this may be an inconvenience for some, it is a necessary safety measure to protect both people and property. Those affected by the shutoffs are advised to have an emergency kit ready in case of extended outages.

This is a developing story and will be updating this information with further updates soon.
