In April 2020, Rogin published a piece on diplomatic cables made by US diplomats in 2018, detailing safety and staffing concerns the diplomats had had following three visits to the Wuhan Institute of Virology between 2017 and 2018.

According to the cables, the WIV scientists said they lacked the necessary manpower and training to safely operate the Institute’s Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) facility. According to US diplomats, the Institute was also conducting risky research on bat coronaviruses in their labs. Some US officials believe the cables support a theory that the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s research resulted in a lab error that created the COVID-19 transnational epidemic.

After Rogin published a piece in The Daily Beast, Kerry was forced to issue an apologetic letter to Jewish and Israeli leaders. Initially, Rogin stated that the material was obtained from a recording made by an attendee. He eventually admitted that he had recorded the recording.
