Jose Urquidy- Professional Career
On March 2, 2015, Urquidy became an international free agent and signed with the Houston Astros. The next year, he made his professional debut, playing for both the Greeneville Astros and the Tri-City ValleyCats in his first professional season. In 2016, he pitched for the Quad Cities River Bandits and the Lancaster JetHawks. Urquidy was unable to play after undergoing Tommy John’s surgery in 2017. He pitched for the Buies Creek Astros and Tri-City in 2018. He spent the first half of the season with the Corpus Christi Hooks before joining the Round Rock Express.
On July 2, 2019, the Astros promoted him to the major leagues. He made his major league debut that night, pitching against the Colorado Rockies. Urquidy started Game 4 of the 2019 World Series for the Houston Astros against the Washington Nationals, becoming only the third Mexican-born starter in World Series history. He pitched five innings, allowing two hits and striking out four batters. With the Astros’ victory, Urquidy became the second Mexican-born pitcher to win a World Series game, joining Fernando Valenzuela.
In 2021, he started Game 3 of the ALCS against the Boston Red Sox and Game 2 of the World Series against the Atlanta Braves, and despite a shaky start in the former that lasted less than three minutes, he bounced back well in the latter, pitching five innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts as the Astros defeated the Braves. With the win, Urquidy became the first Mexican-born pitcher to win two World Series games. He then pitched one scoreless inning of relief in Game 5, earning the win and becoming the most successful foreign-born player in World Series history.
