Mitchell Starc Facts

  1. Mitchell, during the 3rd test match of the 2012–13 edition of the Border–Gavaskar Trophy (a biennial test series contested by Australia and India), had become the first cricketer ever to have batted at number 9 or lower and survived 100 or more balls in both the innings of the match. His heroics with the bat, however, could not prevent a 6-wicket defeat for Australia as India took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the 4-match series. India won the last test match as well to record their first-ever test series whitewash (the feat of winning all the matches in a series) against Australia.
  2. He was the joint-highest wicket-taker (22) in Australia’s victorious campaign at the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup and was named the ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his heroics. In the subsequent edition of the tournament, he was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament (27) but Australia had faltered at the semi-final stage. This tally of 27 dismissals had set a new record for the most number of wickets by an individual bowler in a single edition of the tournament.
  3. This combined tally of 49 wickets across the 2015 and 2019 editions of the tournament makes him the 5th-highest wicket-taker in the history of the prestigious tournament, as of March 2024. During the 2019 edition of the tournament, he had also become the first bowler ever to record 3 five-wicket hauls at the ICC Cricket World Cup.
  4. He was the leading wicket-taker (87) in the world in all forms of international cricket for the calendar year 2015.
  5. In December 2016, in the ‘Boxing Day’ test match against Pakistan, he had broken Andrew Symonds’ record of the most number of sixes hit at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in one inning, by smoking 7 sixes.
  6. In November 2017, representing New South Wales against Western Australia, he had become the first bowler ever to record a hat-trick (the feat of picking up 3 wickets off 3 successive deliveries) in each innings of a Sheffield Shield (the premier domestic first-class cricket competition in Australia) match.
  7. He and his wife Alyssa Healy participate in an annual friendly golf competition that they have affectionately named the Steally Cup by combining their last names (Healy and Starc).
  8. He is an ardent supporter of the Greater Western Sydney Giants, a professional club that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), the pre-eminent and only fully professional men’s competition of Australian rules football.
