- Born in Makhachkala, Islam Makhachev had grown up primarily in the remote village of Burshi. He had started getting trained in martial arts from a very young age and during his youth he used to train with future UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Their friendship sustained the test of time and they used to train together until Khabib retired from active competition in UFC.
- Before his professional mixed martial arts career kicked off in August 2010, he was a combat sambo (a Soviet martial art, an internationally-practiced combat sport, and a recognized style of amateur wrestling included in the World Wrestling Championships along with Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling) competitor. He had returned to sambo briefly during his mixed martial arts career and had won the ‘Gold’ medal in the 74 kg category at the 2016 Sofia World Sambo Championships. In the final match of the tournament, he had defeated his opponent by a margin of 7–0.
