Is Netflix Resident Evil Canon With The Game? How Does Canon Work In Resident Evil?

What Is A Canon?

Storylines from the Resident Evil franchise can be found in games, novels, comic books, and films. Even when simply focusing on the canon created by Capcom for its console games, there are a number of acknowledged parallel universes in the franchise (which we dub the “Prime Universe”).

Is Netflix Resident Evil Canon With The Game?

Yes, in a manner. Even though the Netflix series is set in post-apocalyptic Europe in 2036 and New Raccoon City in 2024, the events of the games all take place in this world. The Raccoon City Incident actually occurs in 1998, proving that the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are set in the same reality as the Netflix series. The TV program is essentially a continuation of the games, but it’s unlikely that the games will ever make any mention to the TV show.

How Does Canon Work In Resident Evil?

It should be noted that the “Prime” canon, which the Wiki refers to as Capcom’s official canon for its console games, underwent significant modification over time, with Resident Evil 4’s release being the biggest shift. It should be noted that not all works created after 2005 fall under the “Prime” umbrella. The license for Constantin Film was never withdrawn or renegotiated, and as recently as 2021, it is producing Resident Evil movies and a TV series that takes place outside of the Prime continuity. Despite the expiration of Pocket Books’ license, Titan Books was able to create its own versions of the Resident Evil movies because of a similar deal.
