Vernal Edge Is A Fast-Paced Metroidvania With Family Drama, Coming To Switch

A mysterious floating city, estranged father figure and sword-wielding combat are but three of the features that seem to run throughout Vernal Edge — the pixel art Metroidvania soon to come to Switch — and this level of mystery has certainly piqued our interest.

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, publisher PID Games has taken to Twitter to announce that Hello Penguin’s sword-slashing family drama would be coming soon to Switch. The announcement also saw the reveal of a console trailer which shows the game’s mechanics in action.

Those eager to explore the floating kingdom of Haricot will play as Vernal, a hero bent on finding her estranged father to come to terms with her past. The journey seems to be quite classical from a Metroidvania point of view, but the retro pixelated style and fantasy-esque setting have us thinking of Astalon: Tears of the Earth and Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, and we’re always happy to see more games like those!

We are also a sucker for seeing 3D gameplay in an otherwise 2D game — as you can see in the trailer, navigating the floating islands of Haricot look to add a different visual style to the genre staples around it.

For a closer look at some of the features that you can expect to find in Vernal Edge, take a look at the following from the game’s Steam page:

– A Fast-Paced Metroidvania – Explore the floating islands of Haricot. Town or dungeon, leave no stones unturned in order to gain more powers! Jump, dash, slide your way into beautiful pixel art environments and don’t forget: secrets could be anywhere!
Dynamic and Rewarding Combat System – Strive for excellence as you master Vernal’s many combos and spells to create the deadliest suite of attacks to destroy your enemies! The large number of options at your disposal every time you strike your foes makes Vernal Edge’s battles a constantly renewed source of excitement.
Make Your Own Way – As long as there’s wind in your sail and a fire in your heart, you are free! In Vernal Edge, you can take your aircraft to any island you want, and explore them in the order you choose.

A PC demo can currently be found over on Steam for those wanting to give this platforming adventure a go.

While we don’t have an official release date as of yet, you can be sure that we will be updating with any further announcements quicker than you can say ‘fantasy-inspired Metroidvania revenge mystery”.
