Mate Pavic Career

Mate Pavić started playing tennis at the age of 5. He began playing tennis after being inspired by his father and sister.

Pavic is primarily a doubles player. As a junior, Pavic posted a singles win-loss record of 95–51 (90–39 in doubles) and reached a combined ranking of No. 5 in January 2011. His biggest success as a junior came at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships – Boys’ doubles where he won the title partnering with UK’s George Morgan.

In 2011, Pavic turned into a professional. After winning the Boys’ Doubles at Wimbledon Championship, Pavic received a wild card to the 2012 Zagreb Indoors doubles tournament. He reached his first ATP doubles finals at the age of 18 years and 7 months, partnering with Ivan Dodig.

Notably, in 2012, Pavic reached his career-high ranking in singles at world No. 295. He won several ATP- tour-level matches to achieve his singles ranking.

Pavic wanted to pursue his tennis career in both singles and doubles but in 2016, due to introduction of doubles qualifying events, Pavic decided to focus more on doubles.

Pavić won his first ATP doubles title at ATP Nice Open in May 2015, with partner Michael Venus. From May 2015 to October 2016 Pavić and Venus reached 11 ATP doubles finals, winning five of them. However, Pavic and Venus were not successful at Grand Slam events, thus, they decided to split at the end of 2016.

Nevertheless, in the same year, that is 2016, Pavic went on to win the mixed doubles title with Laura Siegemund. In 2017, Pavic temporarily partnered with Oliver Marach during the European clay-court season.

However, Pavić and Marach then made it to three consecutive grass-court finals, including the 2017 Wimbledon, but they lost the Wimbledon final. Then, in October Pavić and Marach won their first tournament as a team at the Stockholm Open. For all the impressive results, Pavic finished the season ranked No. 17.

The year 2018 was a great year for Pavic and Marach. The duo went on to win 17 matches in a row, winning titles at the Qatar Open, Auckland Open, and also won their first Grand Slam title at the 2018 Australian Open.

In Australian Open, Pavic also won his second mixed doubles Grand Slam title, partnering with Gabriela Dabrowski.

Pavić and Marach’s winning streak came to an end at the Rotterdam Open in February, they lost in the final. In April, Pavić and Marach reached their first ATP 1000 Masters Series finals in Monte Carlo. However, they lost in the finals against Bryan brothers.

On 21 May 2018, Pavic became the world No. 1 ranked player in doubles, and spent 8 weeks at the top. Subsequently, Pavic finished the 2018 season at no. 3.

After the 2019 French Open, Marach and Pavić ended their partnership. Next, Pavic partnered with Bruno Soares and won his first Masters title at 2019 Shanghai Rolex Masters in October. Next, Pavic reached the final of Stockholm Open. Due to good results, Pavić briefly returned to top 10 rankings, but finished the 2019 season ranked world number 18.

In 2020, Pavić and Soares won the 2020 US Open tournament. It was the second men’s doubles Grand Slam title of Pavić’s career. Next, the duo reached the 2020 French Open and 2020 Rolex Paris Masters finals but they lost both the finals. Nevertheless, the pair finished the 2020 season ranked world No. 1. in the doubles category.

In 2021, Pavic partnered with Nikola Mektić. They won four ATP titles including the doubles title at the 2021 Miami Open. On April 18 2021, Pavić won his fifth overall and second ATP Masters title of the year at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.

Pavic next won the title at the 2021 Italian Open. Subsequently, Pavic and Mektić created history for themselves by winning the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. They became the first Croatian players to win the Wimbledon men’s doubles title.

Furthermore, Pavic and Mektić created another history by winning the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. It was Croatia’s first gold medal in tennis.
