How to Build a Functional Room Under the Stairs in The Sims 4

Guides

Need more room in your tiny home build in The Sims 4? Here’s your step-by-step guide to build a functional room under the stairs.

Stairs have always been a bit of a pain in The Sims 4. They have a massive footprint, which makes them a huge waste of space. But now, with this Sims 4 building hack, you can turn that lost space into a fully functional room under the stairs.

How to Build a Functional Room Under the Stairs

Whether you need extra room in your latest tiny home build, or you want to recreate a less TERF-y version of the wizarding world that shall not be named, you need to try out this fun Sims 4 building hack. Here’s the how-to.

Step 1: Adjust the Wall Height

First, you’ll need to adjust your room height to either medium or tall. The standard room height doesn’t leave enough room under the stairs for your, well, room under the stairs. Medium height will give you a small space for a nook or study, while tall will give you enough space for a whole bedroom.

Step 2: Build the Stairs

Build the staircase of your choice, leaving at least one tile of space between the top stair and the wall, as shown. The more space you leave between the stair and the wall, the larger your room will be.

Next, widen the staircase to at least two tiles wide. Again, wider stairs, bigger room.

Step 3: Delete and Rebuild the Wall

Use the sledgehammer tool to delete the wall surrounding the underside of the stairs. Then use the wall tool to enclose the space. You can add a column at the end of the wall section to give it a finished look.

Step 4: Add a Door

Next, add any normal-height door to any part of the wall that’s not directly under the stairs.

Step 5: Decorate

Finally, decorate it however you like! Add a cozy reading chair, bookshelf, television, or a desk and chair to make a mini office. It makes a perfect spot for a bathroom, too. And if you added extra space by increasing the wall height, stair width, or space between the stairs and the wall, you could put a whole bedroom under there.

Voila!

And there you have it – a fully functional room under the stairs in The Sims 4. This space-saving build is the perfect addition to your next tiny home. Before you go, be sure to check out our other Sims 4 building guides, including All Build Mode Items in The Sims 4 High School Years Pack.
