Grainger spent his childhood at South Elmsall Boys before being selected for a test at Wrexham in July 1949. He was a part of the Cheshire County League’s reserve team in 1949–50.
His National Service restricted his first-team possibilities under manager Peter Jackson, as he did not play in the 1951–52 season, only in four games in the 1952–53 season.
Grainger joined Third Division team Port Vale after manager Norman Low paid £6,000 for his services in October 1961. He made a ‘triumphant’ debut on October 21, scoring in a 4–1 victory over Torquay United at Vale Park.
On January 27, he led his new squad to a 0–0 draw against former club Sunderland in the FA Cup fourth round, and he gave his teammates placebo tablets to boost their confidence before the game.
He started the first game of the 1963–64 season, a 1–0 loss to Shrewsbury Town, but due to a groyne injury, he was sidelined for the next seven months, and Ron Smith was brought in as a long-term left-wing replacement.
Grainger joined Doncaster Rovers on August 7, 1964, after departing manager Oscar Hold signed him for a £30-a-week wage and a £1,000 signing-on fee. Grainger played his final official game in the Football League on October 15.
Billy Bingham offered Grainger a job as a scout for Mansfield Town in the North East in 1978, and he suggested Chris Waddle to the club, but they didn’t take him up on it. Musical Career of Colin Grainger
Len Young, a talent agent, signed Grainger in 1956. His first gig was as a support act for the Hilltoppers in Sheffield, for which he was paid £50 and sang three songs from the back catalogs of Al Jolson, Nat King Cole, and Billy Eckstine.
Due to his football obligations, he renounced an opportunity to join the Hilltoppers on a financially lucrative tour of the United States. His achievements earned him an appearance on ITV and a regular column in Brian Glanville’s Sport Express.
He signed a £250 per week summer agreement with MCA in February 1958. He was given a chance to tour Australia with comedian Nat Jackley in the summer of 1960, but he was rejected because it would interfere with his football pre-season preparation.
On June 13, 1963, in Stockport, he shared a bill with the Beatles, who were paid the same £50 as Grainger after accepting the contract just a few months before their recent chart breakthrough with “Please Please Me” and “From Me to You.”
