Family Matters sitcom is an American television sitcom that debuted on ABC  on September 22, 1989, and ended on May 9, 1997. However, it moved to CBS, which was shown from September 19, 1997, to July 17, 1998. A spin-off of Perfect Strangers,  the best series revolves around the Winslow family, a middle-class African – American family living in Chicago, Illinois. In the series’s first season, the show introduced the Winslows’ nerdy neighbor Steve Urkel played by Jaleel White, who was initially scripted to appear as a one-time character. However, he quickly became the show’s main character, joining the main cast. This sitcom is continued for nine seasons.  Family Matter’s sitcom became the second-longest U.S. sitcom with an amazing  African-American cast, behind only The Jeffersons. It aired for 215 episodes, and ranked third, behind only Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, and The Jeffersons (253). Family Matters sitcom was the last live-action scripted primetime show that debuted in the 1980s to leave the air and outlasted all other primetime network debuts of the 1980s except The Simpsons.

1. Rosetta LeNoire as Mother Winslow

The Golden Girls in the movies and grandparents are never the main stars of these excellent sitcoms. But this show has been an essential function of some of the most iconic family units in small screen comedy and fun scenes. She died on 17 March 2002. From Frank and Marie’s show in Everybody Loves character Raymond to Albert in The Goldbergs series, the old fans of this series can always be relied on to share their wisdom with their younger counterparts in this show. Rosetta LeNoire played Mother Winslow in the Family Matters sitcom was critically released. She was central to some of the American sitcom’s most memorable moments during its nine-season run. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kelly Shangyne Williams, who played Laura in Family Matters, even described her best character of the series.

2. Sherman Hemsley as Captain Marion Savage

Sherman Hemsley is best known for playing George Jefferson in All In the Family and The Jeffersons, the latter of which earned him Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominations. Actor Sherman died on 24 July 2012. He also had a memorable guest character in the Family Matters sitcom, playing Carl’s boss sitcom, Captain Marion Savage, in a few episodes in this show between 1994 and 1995. The Captain wasn’t the most popular character because he tended to cheat at golf and make life difficult for Carl. At the same time, Hemsley delivered a colossal performance that proved why he’s regarded as a sitcom.

3. Michelle Thomas as Myra Monkhouse 

Actor Michelle Thomas in a Family Matters sitcom debuted in the fourth season as the character Myra Monkhouse. much like her boyfriend, Myra was soon promoted to a leading role and became an integral part of the Family Matters group. Unfortunately, she dies on 23 December 1998. The character’s obsession with Urkel and her jealousy toward Laura made her polarizing among fans and created some entertaining moments. Of course, Thomas was much more excellent than her on-screen persona.

4. Barry Jenner as Lt. Lieu Murtaugh 

Character Captain Savage became Carl’s boss at the Chicago Police Department, the father of the Winslow gang served under Lieutenant Lou Murtaugh is played by actor Barry Jenner. Murtaugh was the main character in Family Matters between 1990 and 1992, and he was able to make a significant impact with his silly antics. Legendary actor Barry Jenner died on 9 August 2016While he was pretty incompetent at his job, he had the lots of patience of the saint because he was one of the few characters who allowed Urkel. They even developed a bond over some romantic misery. Unfortunately for the pair, their friendship ended after Murtaugh took all of the nerd’s money during a poker game.

5. Naya Rivera as Gwendolyn 

Naya Rivera was a child actor when she played in the Family Matters sitcom. Gwendolyn is a young child who asked Urkel for love advice. The actress only appeared in three sitcom episodes. She died on 8 July 2020. Still, her best performances caught the eye of the television scene and she landed parts in The Fresh Prince series of Bel-Air, The Arsenio Hall Show, and The Young and the Restless. Rivera was a youngster known for her confident performances and upbeat charisma. As Today pointed out, some adults who worked with her back in the day said she was wise in her years and had a natural for the craft in this series.

A spinoff of the hit 1980s sitcom Perfect Strangers sitcom, Family Matters began life as a modest hit before undergoing into one of the most successful comedies on the small screen at the time of this movie. From 1986 to 1993, the sitcom recorded the hilarious misadventures of the Winslow family and Urkel, capturing viewers’ hearts. Audiences of this show fondly remember these characters and the actors who portrayed them. However, some of the show’s most memorable residents have sadly passed away since Family Matters ended.

Family Matters Plot 

Family Matters sitcom is a spin-off series of the successful “Perfect Strangers,” which was conceived to focus on the Winslows, a middle-class suburban Black family from Chicago. Harriet was the sarcastic elevator operator at the Chicago Chronicle newspaper while her portly husband Carl was a Chicago police sergeant; they had three children: Eddie, 14 years old, Laura who was 12 years old, and Judy who was 9 years old. While somewhat successful in its early months on the air, the Family Matters sitcom didn’t become a real hit until the appearance of Winslow’s next-door neighbor kid character Steve Urkel. The robust character Urkel, complete with a high-pitched voice and suspenders, was the ultimate nerd with a total crush on the character Laura. His well-meaning but weird ways, in addition to countless backfiring devices and visits at inconvenient times, caused no end of grief for the characters Eddie, Laura, and especially Carl. the main character Harriet however was more understanding in this sitcom. Also, this is a part of the action where Harriet’s recently widowed sister Rachel Crawford and her son Richie Carl’s mother Estelle. character Eddie’s slow-witted character pal Waldo.
