After that, in order to advance his profession, he began writing for his high school and college newspapers. He began his career as a sportswriter for the Illinois Daily Pantagraph, which he left in 1965, and subsequently worked as a columnist and staff writer for the Louisville Courier-Journal until 1977. Dave worked for the Washington Post from 1977 to 1984. He then worked at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution from 1984 until 1989. Kindred worked for National Sports Daily after leaving the Atlanta Journal-Constitution until 1991. He then returned to Atlanta Paper in 1995, where he remained until 1997.

He has worked as a journalist for Golf Digest since 1997. Dave has covered more than 40 Kentucky Derbys, more than 40 World Series, about 40 Super Bowls, and approximately 8 Olympics.
