Cameron began his legal career as a clerk for Federal District Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove in the Eastern District of New York for two years. Later, from 2015 to 2017, he worked as legal counsel for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. During that time, he effectively supervised the confirmation processes for conservative federal judges, including Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch. In 2017, he returned to the Frost Brown Todd law firm in Louisville as a senior associate. On January 21, 2019, he announced his candidacy for Attorney General of Kentucky. He received President Donald Trump’s endorsement after defeating State Senator Wil Schroder in the Republican primary by a margin of 132,400 votes (55.3 percent) to 106,950 votes (44.7 percent).
He defeated Democratic former Attorney General Greg Stumbo in the November 2019 General Elections. More than 100 protestors marched to Cameron’s house and occupied his property to demand punishment for the cops involved in the shooting, as organized by the social justice movement Until Freedom. Police detained 87 protesters and charged them with a variety of offenses, including Intimidating a Participant in the Legal Process, which is a very serious violation. Cameron accused the protestors of invading private property and claiming that the protest’s goal was to “increase” tension and division in the community.
He stated that the grand jury charged Officer Brett Hankison with three counts of wanton endangerment (a Class D felony, which implies that a person can be found guilty even if they did not intend to injure anyone or commit a crime) in relation to the family who lived next door.
