Chase Kalisz’s Professional Career

Chase Kalisz’s professional swimming career began with a silver medal in the 400-meter individual medley at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona. He finished in 4:09.22, just half a second slower than gold medallist Daiya Seto of Japan. Caleb Kalisz, a freshman at the University of Michigan, won the 400-yard individual medley in 3:38.05.05 at the 2013 NCAA Championships in Indianapolis.

Kalisz successfully defended his title in the 400-yard individual medley at the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, swimming a time of 3:34.50, breaking the American record formerly set by Tyler Clary in the event. During his junior season with the Georgia Bulldogs, Kalisz finished second in the 400-yard Individual Medley behind Texas Longhorns’ Will Licon, finishing considerably off his personal best time.

Kalisz finished third in the 2015 FINA World Championships, behind Daiya Seto of Japan and Dávid Verrasztó of Hungary, with a time of 4:10.05, good for a bronze medal. Kalisz qualified for the 2016 Olympic Team for the first time in his career by finishing fourth in the 400 meters individual medley at the 2016 United States Olympic Trials.

Kalisz’s favorite event during his final year at Georgia was the 400-meter individual medley, which he won again, beating his own American record with a time of 3:33.41. Kalisz won the 200 and 400-meter individual medleys at the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships in Indianapolis, earning a spot for the 2017 World Championship Team in both events. On the second day of competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Kalisz won gold in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:09.42 seconds. It was the first Olympic medal won by the United States in almost a century.
