A Kanye Trilogy, Mrs. Maisel returns and an alien abduction: Here’s what’s new on Netflix, Prime Video and more this week

With so many different streaming platforms and cable offerings to navigate through, choosing What To Watch has never been harder. To make things easier, here are our best tune-in tips for the week ahead.

MONDAY FEB. 14

Bel-Air

The wait for this one has been excruciating. For those of you that loved Will Smith as the original “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” it will be interesting to see if Valentine Day’s will bring the same love for its reboot. This time around, the show isn’t a comedy, with Smith being replaced by Jabari Banks in the lead role. Once again, the new Will leaves West Philadelphia for California to stay with Aunt Viv (played by Cassandra Freeman) and Uncle Phil (played by Adrian Holmes) in Bel-Air but that’s where the similarities cease. Set in modern America, this drama offers audiences a new take on Will’s complicated journey. Top pick of the week.

jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy

Fans of Yeezy will find this three-part documentary fascinating. “jeen-yuhs” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and is the result of more than 21 years of behind-the-scenes footage. The material was provided by longtime Kanye West collaborators Clarence Simmons and Chike Ozah. It follows the rapper from his early beginnings in Chicago to his Grammy-winning career. In January, Kanye used Instagram to say that he had to get final approval of the doc before its Netflix drop but the filmmakers have rebuked this prospect to keep the series as authentic as possible.

Swap Shop

This quirky series, which is best described as “Storage Wars” for the new generation, is back with its second season. Seasoned collectors race each other to various Tennessee locations after hearing of sales through a junk swap radio program. The concept of one person’s junk being another’s person’s treasure never really gets old.

Its sixth grade protagonist has a never-ending need to prove how awesome he is to the world. “Big Nate” has to deal with some big problems that include disasters at home and detentions at school. The 26-episode series was supposed to debut last year but was delayed because of COVID-19.

FRIDAY FEB. 18

Love is Blind

The second season of this strange series drops on Friday. It offers desperate singles the chance to find their perfect match with just one catch. They don’t get to see their partner until they agree to get engaged! Yes, it is just as odd as it sounds. If the first season was kind of intriguing, the sophomore one is even wilder. Keep an eye out for a love triangle (yes, I know how hard this is to believe on a series that doesn’t allow its contestants to see each other), and a guy who tries to figure out a woman’s body weight without seeing her by asking if it would be easy for him to lift her up on his shoulders at a music festival. Smooth.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Hard to believe we have already arrived at the fourth season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The time around, Midge employs a new brand of humour. The season begins with Mrs. Maisel and her manager recovering from being kicked off Shy Baldwin’s tour. Look for guest appearances from Kelly Bishop, Milo Ventimiglia, and George Costanza … I mean Jason Alexander.

Power Book IV: Force

The latest spinoff to the “Power” series features Joseph Sikora as Tommy Egan premiered last week. It follows Tommy after he cuts ties with New York and the series features Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson among its executive producers. At last week’s Television Critics Association Panel, Sikora said that while Tommy’s location has changed to Chicago, he hasn’t changed at all. “Tommy’s a wolf that gets caught in a trap in Chicago, but he’s going to chew off his arm to survive. That’s just who this character is,” Sikora said.
